I arrived
in Islamabad on the last Arab Emirates flight out of Dubai
before they closed the Pakistani airspace. The US led campaign against
the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan had begun and I was heading
west from the capital to the border town of Peshawar in the North
West Frontier Provinces.

At the
foot of the Khyber Pass and cloaked in a
blanket of dust and diesel sits the Great Game city known literally
as
"Frontier Town." A dusty and colorful cowboy city with
strong ties and
sympathies to their Pashtun brothers the Taliban.

Led by
some of Pakistan's hard right like the Jamiat-Ul-Ulema-I-Islam,
opposition was quick and well orchestrated.

And from
the morning after the first bombs
fell, tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to
show
their outrage.
