Free Kareem!

It's that old saying attributed to Voltaire that comes to mind, of course: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
While it turns out the French philosopher didn't exactly say that - it was in fact the work of a biographer in an attempt at summarization of his views - that's a fair way to sum up the line which some very active supporters of Kareem Amer (real name: Abdul Kareem Nabeel Suleiman Amer), a young man, from Egypt and, until his imprisonment in 2007, a blogger, are taking.
As noted by Rob Wood last month in his article for polosbastards.com, “The 7 Most Dangerous Countries for Bloggers”(1) , Kareem was arrested a few years ago and ultimately imprisoned last year for insulting, amongst other things and people, Islam and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, managing to annoy the two factions which usually publicly annoy each other.
Thank goodness for him he has got himself some supporters, including some observant Muslims of The Free Kareem Coalition (2), who abhor what he had to say but defend his right to say it. To be able to agree on disagreeing can be quite a thing.
Take some time, read about his case (3) and help if you can.
